One day. Real people. Real impact.

Our first Stroke Play Golf event showed us exactly why this needs to exist.

32people came along
13played nine holes in buggies
3took to the driving range

But the numbers only tell a small part of the story.

Two of the team talking with guests in front of the 'Make a difference' screen Making a difference, together.
  • An 81-year-old father, following numerous strokes, played alongside his son for the first time in several years. His first tee shot was greeted with cheers and applause — and he went on to complete eight holes.

  • A former 12-handicap golfer who hadn’t played for around ten years had lost his confidence. Encouraged by his wife to come along, he played nine holes — and returned with a huge smile on his face.

  • Another gentleman hadn’t played for 19 years following his stroke. With the use of only one arm, he began hitting balls one-handed on the range, surprised everyone with how naturally he struck the ball, and is now planning to return with his son.

  • Three women were able to meet, play and share their experiences. One was Clare, Longhirst’s current club champion, who returned to golf following her own stroke four years ago.

  • A father who had become isolated following his stroke came along with his daughter, Natalie. They went to the range together and did something he hadn’t done for a long time.

I feel very emotional and proud seeing my Dad try and do something he hasn’t done for a long time and for putting himself out of his comfort zone. Everyone was so nice, warm and welcoming… we will definitely be at any other events if we can make it.

— Natalie, after the day at Longhirst

You don’t have to play golf to benefit

Those who didn’t play were still part of the conversations, laughter, camaraderie and support that developed throughout the day.

A moment from our first day at Longhirst Golf Club.

It’s not just about the golf

One of the biggest things I have taken away from Wednesday at Longhirst was the interaction of everyone, but especially the family members who came together. The encouragement, the patience and the care that they all shared with each other.

Having a shared experience makes such a difference. Something to talk about in the evening, something to look forward to doing again and again.

Golf is the conduit to bring people together. Friendship and support is the electricity that runs through it to power it.

— Andrew Biggs

A huge thank you to Longhirst Golf Club for embracing the idea and creating such a welcoming environment.

Back to community.Back to confidence.Back to golf.
